Presentations and pictures

Change the words on a slide and move what is on it, or crop and mark up a picture, without leaving Sopycat.

PowerPoint decks open slide by slide, and you can change the words on them and move, resize and turn what is on them, right on the slide. Pictures open with a picture editor for the everyday jobs: turning a photo the right way up, cropping a screenshot, drawing a box around the button that matters, or hiding a name. The file you added is kept, and every save is a new version beside it.

Change the words on a slide

The slide in the middle is live: what you type shows on it at once, in the deck's own fonts, sizes, colors and bullets, and its thumbnail in the list follows.

  1. Pick a slide from the list on the left. It shows large in the middle.
  2. Type on the slide itself: double-click a box (or click a box that is already selected) and type where you clicked. Enter starts a new paragraph or bullet, Shift+Enter a new line in the same one, and Esc stops typing. Pasted words come in plain, in the box's own look.
  3. Or type under Words on slide, where each box on the slide has its own field: the title, the text boxes, and each table cell. Each line in a field is one paragraph, or one bullet. A field grows as its words do. Clicking a box on the slide marks its field, and clicking in a field selects its box.
  4. To make a line bold or italic, or change its size or color, put the cursor in it and use the bar above the fields (Ctrl+B and Ctrl+I work while typing on the slide).
  5. Press Save or Ctrl+S. The deck is saved at once as a new version.

Saving changes only the characters you changed, so a bold or colored word elsewhere in the paragraph keeps its look. Each paragraph keeps its font, size, color and bullets, and everything else in the deck (the design, pictures, animations and speaker notes) stays exactly as it was. A box set to shrink its words to fit (PowerPoint's Shrink text on overflow) shrinks them on the slide as you type, as PowerPoint does, and the save writes that size into the deck. Words in a table cell show on the slide once the deck is saved. For animations and the theme, use Open in its app.

Move, resize and turn things on the slide

  1. Click a box, picture or shape on the slide to select it. It gets a frame with eight square handles and a round one above it.
  2. Drag it to move it. Its edges and center snap to the slide's edges and center and to the other shapes, with a line showing where; hold Alt to place it freely. A shape cannot be dragged off the slide, so its handles are always in reach.
  3. Drag a square handle to resize it; the opposite side stays put. A picture keeps its proportions from a corner; hold Shift to keep any shape's proportions, or to let a picture's go. Hold Ctrl to resize from the center.
  4. Drag the round handle to turn it. It stops at right angles as you pass them; hold Shift to turn in 15° steps.
  5. The arrow keys nudge the selected shape (Shift for a finer step), Tab selects the next one, and Delete takes it off the slide. Undo and Redo beside Save (or Ctrl+Z and Ctrl+Y on the slide) take moves back and forth.
  6. Add a text box puts a new box on the slide, ready to type in. Add a picture… picks a picture from your computer and fits it onto the slide; drag it into place.
  7. Press Save. Moves, sizes, turns and removals save together with any words you changed, as one new version.

The slide's ⋯ menu adds a blank slide after this one (on the same layout), duplicates it, moves it up or down, or deletes it (it asks first). These save at once.

The slides are drawn by the Office pack in the background, each box and picture separately, so everything on the slide moves as you drag it and looks exactly as the pack draws it. The deck opens at once; a slide shows its picture for a moment until it is ready to edit, and a deck brought in before Sopycat 3.0.2 is drawn this way the first time it is opened. Without the pack the slides are drawn plainly: their words, pictures and colors, without the layout's own shapes, and everything can still be edited and moved.

A deck set in a font this computer does not have

If the deck is set in a font that is not installed on this computer, a note above the slides names the font and says the slides here use a stand-in font. The deck itself is unchanged. Install the font to see the slides as designed.

Sopycat brings a library of about 30 free font families with it, so decks and documents set in them are drawn as designed on any PC: Geist, Inter, Roboto, Open Sans, Lato, Montserrat, Poppins, Oswald, Raleway, Nunito, Source Sans 3, Noto Sans, Work Sans, DM Sans, Rubik, Figtree, Manrope, Plus Jakarta Sans, Space Grotesk, Merriweather, Playfair Display, PT Sans and Ubuntu. For Calibri, Cambria, Arial, Helvetica, Times New Roman, Courier New, Georgia and Segoe UI it carries free fonts with exactly the same letter widths, used only when the real font is not on the PC, so nothing moves. A deck that carries its own fonts inside the file is drawn in them. Fonts that are bought, such as Proxima Nova, still need installing.

Pictures

PNG, JPG, GIF and WebP pictures open as they are. HEIC and HEIF photos from phones, TIFF scans, BMP and AVIF pictures are turned into PNG as you add them, so every program can open them, and the file you added is kept.

Draw a box, Draw a circle, Draw an arrow, Draw a lineDrag on the picture to point something out, in the color you picked
Draw freehandDraw with the mouse, as with a pen
HighlightDrag to lay a yellow highlight over an area
Add wordsClick where the words should go and type them
Add a numbered markerEach click adds the next number: 1, 2, 3 and so on
Add a signatureClick to place the signature kept in Sopycat. If none is kept yet, a pad opens to draw or type one first. See Sign with your handwriting.
Blur outDrag over names, account numbers or faces to pixelate them

The drawing tools match the ones on a PDF's Mark up tab. While a drawing tool is chosen, a Line thickness choice (Thin, Normal or Thick) sits beside the colors; while Add words is chosen, Size of the words (Small, Normal or Large) does.

Blur out turns the area into large blocks rather than a soft blur, because a soft blur can sometimes be sharpened back. Ctrl+Z takes back the last change, Ctrl+Y puts it back, and Undo all takes back every change since the picture was opened (Redo then brings them back one at a time, in order). Once a change is saved, the picture you brought in is still under Versions in the ⋯ menu.

Press Save to keep your changes as a new version in the picture's own format: a JPG stays a JPG. An animated GIF is saved as its first frame.

Make a PDF of a deck or a picture

⋯ › Make a PDF copy

A deck becomes a PDF with one page per slide. A picture becomes a one-page PDF. The PDF joins your library beside it, ready to sign, mark up or send. Decks need the Office pack for this.

My deck or picture opens as a PDF

Decks, HEIC photos and TIFF scans added with an earlier version of Sopycat were turned into PDFs. Open one and press Open as a presentation (or Open as a picture) in the blue bar at the top. If you had already changed the PDF, Sopycat adds the original as its own document instead, so your PDF changes are kept.
