The Steps Recorder replacement that writes the manual

Windows' Steps Recorder (psr.exe) is deprecated and will be removed. Sopycat does what it did, a step with a picture for every click, on your PC with nothing uploaded, and turns the clicks into a manual people can follow.

Everything you used Steps Recorder for

Every click becomes a step

Steps Recorder wrote "User left click on Start" with a picture. Sopycat writes the step from what Windows reports about the control you clicked, with the picture and a box around it.

Nothing leaves the PC

Steps Recorder saved a file on your disk and nothing else. Sopycat records, writes and keeps the manual on your PC, with no account and no upload.

Works in any program

Desktop programs, websites, remote desktops: both tools record the screen, not a browser tab.

What Steps Recorder never did

  • Steps that read like a manual: "Click Save", "Enter 25.00 in Total", not a log line with a timestamp.
  • Edit afterwards: rename, split, merge, reorder, re-record one step, blur a name, add a why.
  • Save as a PDF, a Word document, a web page or a video, or follow along one step at a time.
  • Typing is written down (passwords and card numbers are left out), so the step says what was entered.
  • A shared library on your own drive for the office, with reading confirmations and training records on the Office plan.

Your old .mht files open as manuals

Drop a Steps Recorder file on Sopycat and each line becomes a step with its picture. Years of recordings sent to IT become manuals the next person can follow.

Steps Recorder and Sopycat

Is Steps Recorder gone?
Microsoft listed Steps Recorder as deprecated in November 2023 and says it will be removed in a future release of Windows. As of Windows 11 version 24H2 it is still installed but no longer updated. Microsoft points to the Snipping Tool, Xbox Game Bar and Clipchamp instead, which record video, not steps.
Can I open my old Steps Recorder files?
Yes. Add a .mht file the way you add any document, by dropping it on the Documents page or with Add a document, and it becomes a manual: one step per line, titled in Sopycat's words, with its picture. The sentence Steps Recorder wrote stays as the step's words.
I used Steps Recorder to send a problem to IT. Does Sopycat do that?
Record the problem the same way, press Stop, and save the manual as a PDF to attach to the ticket. IT gets numbered pictures with the clicks marked, plus what was typed.
Is it free like Steps Recorder was?
No. Sopycat has a 14-day free trial with no account and no card, then a subscription per person. Everything you make in the trial stays yours.

Microsoft's own list of deprecated Windows features is the place to check Steps Recorder's status. This page was last checked against it in October 2026.
