Change a Word document without breaking it

Sopycat opens a .docx on its own page, with its margins, fonts, headings, tables and pictures, and you type your changes where they stand. Saving rewrites only what you changed, so the styles, header, footer and everything else come back out exactly as they went in.

What you can do on the page

Quick, everyday changes to the words: a new date, a name, a corrected paragraph, a policy line that changed.

  • Open a .docx on its page, with the margins, fonts, headings, lists, tables, pictures, header and footer as Word shows them.
  • Click a paragraph and type. Enter starts a new paragraph, Backspace at the start joins it to the one before, and pasted lines become paragraphs.
  • A bar sets a paragraph's bold, italic, underline, size and colour.
  • Bring in older .doc, .rtf and .odt files with the free Office pack: they open the same way and save as .docx, and the file you added is kept.
  • Make a PDF copy from the document's menu, ready to sign, mark up or send (the exact layout needs the free Office pack).
  • Select, cut, copy and paste across paragraphs, with undo.
  • Find and replace, with match case and whole words, through tables too.
  • Add, resize, move and remove pictures.
  • Add and delete table rows and columns.
  • Accept or reject tracked changes, and read, answer and add comments.

What saving keeps

Everything you did not change. Saving writes only the characters you typed, so the words around them keep their own font, size, colour and links, and the file's layout, styles, header and footer come back exactly as they were.

Each save is a new version. The file you added stays under Versions in the document's ⋯ menu, so nothing is ever lost.

Kept on your computer

A Word document is opened, edited and saved on your PC, in your library folder or the shared folder your office uses. No account, no upload, and no AI reading your files.

  • Files live in a folder you choose, and also show as ordinary files in Documents › Word, so any program can open them.
  • Open in its app and Show in folder sit at the top of every document.

Questions

Do I need Microsoft Word to edit a .docx in Sopycat?
No. Sopycat opens and saves .docx files itself. Older .doc, .rtf and .odt files are brought into a .docx as you add them, which uses the free Office pack (LibreOffice) that Sopycat can download for you.
Will saving in Sopycat change my document's formatting?
No. Saving changes only what you changed on the page. Paragraphs you did not touch are written back exactly as they were, and the margins, header and footer, columns, tables, pictures, styles and fonts come back out as they went in. Each save is a new version, and the file you added stays under Versions.
Is my document uploaded anywhere?
No. The document is opened, edited and saved on your computer, in your library folder. Nothing is sent to Sopycat or to an AI service.
Can Sopycat show tracked changes and comments?
Yes. Changes made in Word with Track Changes on are listed with who made them and when, and each can be accepted or rejected. Comments can be read, answered, resolved, added and deleted, and are saved as ordinary Word comments.
When should I open the document in Word instead?
For page design: rearranging a layout, changing columns, or sending a document back with your own edits marked as tracked changes. Open in its app, at the top of every document, opens it in Word.
