Excel files, edited as spreadsheets

Workbooks and CSV files open with their sheets, formulas, colours, merged cells and frozen rows, as they look in Excel. Type into a cell and every formula that uses it is worked out again at once. Saving changes only what you edited, so macros, charts and pivot tables come through untouched.

What you can do

The jobs offices open Excel for most, on the same file, without a second program.

  • Type into cells; Sopycat reads 1,250, $40, 15% and 9/29/2026 the way Excel does.
  • Formulas worked out again on every sheet as you type, with SUM, AVERAGE, IF, VLOOKUP, XLOOKUP, SUMIFS, COUNTIF, TEXT, DATE and many more.
  • Bold, colours, alignment, number formats, borders, merged cells and wrapped text.
  • Insert and delete rows and columns, with formulas and sums moving along; sort, freeze, fill down, find and replace.
  • Add, rename and delete sheets; formulas on other sheets follow a new name.
  • Column, bar, line, area, pie, doughnut and scatter charts that follow the cells, saved as real Excel charts.
  • Pivot tables that sum, count or average a table, saved as real Excel pivot tables.
  • Copy and paste to and from Excel.

Which files open

You addWhat happens
Excel workbook (.xlsx)Opens as a spreadsheet and saves as .xlsx.
CSV and tab-separated (.csv, .tsv)Opens as one sheet and saves as the same kind of file, every value exactly as written.
Older Excel (.xls, .xlsb) and OpenDocument (.ods)Brought into a modern workbook as you add it, with the Office pack. The file you added is kept.
Excel with macros (.xlsm)Opens and can be changed. The macros are kept exactly as they are, and never run.

Make a PDF copy from the spreadsheet's menu: one page per sheet, each as wide as the sheet, so columns are never split across pages (with the Office pack).

When Excel is the better tool

Running macros, and the parts Sopycat keeps but does not change: slicers, sparklines, form controls and links to other workbooks. A line above the sheet says which ones a workbook has, and Open in its app takes it to Excel.

Questions

Do I need Excel to edit a spreadsheet in Sopycat?
No. Sopycat opens and saves .xlsx and CSV files itself. Older .xls and .xlsb files and OpenDocument spreadsheets are brought into a modern workbook as you add them, which uses the free Office pack (LibreOffice).
Will my formulas, charts and pivot tables survive?
Yes. Saving changes only what you edited and leaves everything else exactly as it was: values, formulas, formatting, merged cells, column widths, frozen rows, notes, data validation, conditional formatting, named ranges, pictures, charts and pivot tables. New charts and pivot tables are saved as real Excel ones.
Does Sopycat run macros?
No, never. A workbook with macros opens and can be edited, and the macros are kept exactly as they are when you save. To run one, open the workbook in Excel with Open in its app.
What if a formula uses a function Sopycat doesn't know?
The cell keeps showing its last result and a line above the sheet says so. Excel works every formula out again when it next opens the file, so nothing is left wrong.
Does a CSV file stay a CSV?
Yes, with the same separator and line endings, and every value exactly as written, so a code like 007 keeps its zeros.
